A Chicago bicycle messenger is in intensive care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after suffering serious injuries in Wicker Park yesterday afternoon. Dustin Valenta, who rides for Cut Cats Courier, was struck by a motor vehicle at around 12:30 p.m. on Friday fracturing all of his ribs, his pelvis and shattering the bottom of his skull, according to a post on Cut Cats' Facebook page. The incident reportedly took place "around the 1400 block of Milwaukee Avenue at Wood Street." Hospital physicians have expressed that Mr. Valenta's bicycle helmet may have saved his life. He was not working at the time of the crash.
Cut Cats wishes to put together a benefit for their fallen comrade.

ReplyDeleteI do not see that Cut Cats has workers' comp insurance unless they have a different corporate name under which the policy is listed. This is disconcerting.

David,
ReplyDeleteI'm told by a source that Dustin was not working at the time of the crash, so that may be a moot point.

ReplyDeleteThat intersection is more dangerous than six points. The tiny misplaced lights, the offset nature of the cross streets and driveway entrances make it hazardous for, bikes, pedestrians and cars alike. A new set of lights, crosswalks, and other road markings would go a long way to make everyone safer. Mr.Valenta is not the first to be injured in that vicinity. Hopefully his recovery is swift and he will be able to get back on two wheels soon.
ReplyDeleteI got their name through internet and was not disappointed. They lived up to their service very much. I felt very comfortable delivering my items with them.
