Cyclist Killed On July 4th Was A Patriot, Community Leader

Though the details surrounding his death remain unaccounted for, an 81 year old bicyclist killed on the 4th of July was a true patriot.  Robert I. Van Pelt was killed by the driver of a pickup truck as he rode his bike to an Independence Day parade last Wednesday.  Reports of the incident state that the collision occurred along the side of the truck but it is unclear whether the retired U.S. Navy Captain and Boy Scout Coordinator was cut off by the driver. The incident occurred along the 5100 block of West Devon Avenue in Chicago's Edgebrook neighborhood.  Mr. Van Pelt leaves a wife, three children and several grandchildren. He was the former Director of the Edgebrook Community Association.
