A 12 year old boy, Kelly Ryan, was killed last night on Chicago's Southwest Side after being struck by a pick-up truck along a residential intersection, according to
The Southtown Star. The incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. at or near the intersection of
South Narragansett Avenue and 60th Street. Police cited the driver for failing to yield the right of way to a bicyclist and for negligent driving.

I'm all for the cyclists when it comes to dealing with cars. But if the story in the paper is correct, it appears that the boy was riding on the wrong side of the road, against traffic. The last place a driver is likely to look for traffic on the road, especially if the driver happened to be watching for traffic coming from the left as he made his right turn. Parents should teach their kids the danger of riding against traffic.

Jon, based upon the details reported it also seemed to me that the child was riding on the wrong side. That noted, this is a residential area. Kids don't obey, nor will they know, the rules of the road. When driving through a residential area drivers have to be on the look out for children who could come from just about anywhere.
ReplyDeleteI agree that parents have a duty to teach their children (and hope they listen). Thanks for your comment.
